Coordinated UK-French Aerial Assault Targets Daesh Arms Cache in the Syrian region

RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
