In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
