Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the option to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
